| Lyndhurst F.D. Receives Reflective Vests. |
Sun. Dec 14th 2008
Beginning November 24, 2008, a new U.S. Department of Transportation/Federal Highway Administration regulation (Worker Visibility Final Rule - 23 CFR Part 634) will require firefighters and other first responders responding to or working at an incident on federally funded highways to wear a retro reflective safety vest that meets the Class II or III standards of the American National Standards Institute/International Safety Equipment Association (ANSI/ISEA) 107-2004 publication. The ANSI/ISEA 207-2006 Public Safety Vest standard has also been interpreted as meeting this requirement.
However, firefighters directly engaged in fire suppression should not wear traffic safety vests, as they could potentially catch fire or melt if exposed to flame. While this new regulation applies only to responses on federally funded highways, USFA highly recommends that all firefighters and first responders wear ANSI/ISEA compliant highway safety vests while working on any incident on the roadway. Due to this regulation, all Lyndhurst Firefighters have been issued personal vests for responses on the New Jersey Turnpike, and all highway related incidents.
